>>It's gone.
We have about 425 campers.
We had 600 applications this year and we had
to close the camp just so we can make sure we keep the quality
of the camp up.
The camp now is called the Purdue Athlete Life Success
program and we are really aiming the camp to try to improve all
of these youngster's opportunities
for a successful life.
>>There's so many valuable lessons that can be learned
from sports; to play fair, sportsmanship, to know,
to learn what's right and what's wrong and then to be able
to do the right thing.
>>We use to be the NYSB program
and we have some federal funding.
That funding was eliminated by Congress in 2006 so since
that time we've primarily worked with Purdue
and the local community
to create a real viable locally funded engagement program.
>>Well, Purdue, you know, they've always offered things
like this and just a great opportunity for, you know,
kids throughout the community
and I mean did you see they're taking full advantage of it.
Just another opportunity, you know, to help a lot
of the youth, help a lot of the younger guys out, you know,
give them a few pointers and it's just a good time.
>>The athletes that do come back to work with us are the kinds
of role models that we love to have our children emulate.
We have a, I don't know how many today,
19 or 20 Purdue football players who are here, pros as well
as existing players, and it's just wonderful,
the kids are just their eyes are big and their mouths are open
and they're playing hard.
>>We do sports and it's awesome.
I like pretty much everything.
Everybody is friendly.
I made new friends.
>>It's really about them just having a good time and,
you know, just learning things like leadership, just be able
to follow instructions whether that's a coach, teacher, mentor.
As long as they're doing it, they're going to go far in life.
>>I think they invest because they probably at some point
in their life ran across a role model that made a difference
to them and I think they want
to make a difference to these youngsters.
>>It's not about winning and losing,
it's about how you played the game.
It's the fact that you played the game as hard
as you could play it, you played it with good sportsmanship
and that you had fun doing it.
>>I like playing sports and that's the reason that I try
to be in this camp as much as possible because I don't
like being alone and not doing anything over the summer.
>>One, two, three.
>>Work hard.
>>Good job.
>>You coming back next year, what do you think?
>>My cousin use to be bad before he came to this camp
and then he's really happy now
and he likes playing a lot of sports now.
>>On the count of three I want everybody to say finish strong.
One, two, three.
>>Finish strong.
>>One, two, three.
>>Finish strong.
>>One, two, three.
>>Finish strong.
>>Alright, good job.
