>> KATHY: Hi, my name is Kathy Pham. I'm the teensReach treasurer, and I've been here since
my freshman year. I've always liked being at the library because it's a place of knowledge.
You get to learn more about books -- well, you're reading books and you get to learn
about subjects that interest you as well as meeting other people at the library. It's
a lot of fun because being part of teensReach has really changed my outlook on things. Instead
of just being involved at school, I get to meet people who are from Silver Creek, YB,
even Independence, who volunteer as well. And we do a lot of events for the children
and teens. It's a way of being social as well as giving back to the community.
>> LADY: Not only has it been welcoming to the dance troupe and the language school,
but it is inviting for granddaughter, her family. People come here and use the library
feel welcomed. The staff is always very friendly.
>> PAUL: You know, my daughter's been coming to the library ever since - it'll be three
years. She's part Vietnamese and she gets her Vietnamese language training here so she
doesn't forget that because it's not taught in public school. And they're also giving
her some mathematics. It's a very good social environment.
>> ANH: I'm Anh Quach, and I'm a volunteer at the library. And I believe that the library
is one big family. We all care for each other, and we care for the library, and I'm pretty
sure everyone else loves it, too.
>> JENNY: Hi, I'm Jenny Huynh. I'm a junior from Yerba Buena High School, and I'm the
teensReach president. I know it's kind of, like, typical to say that you like everything,
but to be honest, I really like everything about the library and the staff and the kids
that I get to help and all the fun teens that I get to work with.
>> LAWRENCE: This -- the library is a place where you can get resources for school. I
mean, it's pretty fun. Don't you find it enjoyable?
>> JACKSON: Well, I think it's enjoyable, but then, the good thing is that the kids
are enjoying their time here.
>> LAWRENCE: Yeah.
>> JACKSON: For like, they will mostly come to join the events probably because they're
bored at home. Nothing to do.
>> LAWRENCE: Yeah, I know.
>> JACKSON: Free time. And your parents, like, want them to be safe and have fun at the same
time. So I guess --
>> LAWRENCE: It's a break for the parents, too.
>> JACKSON: They enjoy. We learn new stuff.
>> LAWRENCE: Yeah, we can read to them -- I mean, that's -- reading is a life skill.
>> KATHY: Well, the library is mostly like the center point of the community. It's where
people go when they need to learn something about a subject. You check out videos. You
get to participate in fun events, like hula classes, English-learning classes if you're
a new citizen around here and you want to be naturalized, and there's a lot of resources
at the library, too.
>> LISA: Hi, I'm Lisa. I'm the vice president of teensReach. I first joined teensReach because
this is my local library. I had no idea what was in store, but I really love it here because
you don't -- you meet new people, but you also get to see, you know, all the children
and then once you take part into this teensReach thing, it's like, you never imagined that
this could happen, you know. And you never -- you hear people say that this happens in
your library, but you don't really know how much fun it is and how hard the librarians
work, so it's something you shouldn't miss out. So I really love it here.
