The Government has wrapped up its consultation hui
with selected tribes on the partial privatisation
of some state-owned companies.
The meetings have been held after the Government decided to delay
the sale of shares in state-owned company Mighty River Power
until early next year.
Raiha Johns reports.
The Deputy Prime Minister arrived an hour late to Rehua Marae.
So the welcome lasted 10 minutes before kai was served.
The doors were closed to us of Te Karere
at the request of the elders.
This was in spite of them allowing us to film previously.
This is the last 'shares plus' meeting,
but it's also the first that was closed off to the media.
The question is, why?
With the meeting over,
what does Ngai Tahu have to say for themselves?
There were cameras in the five meetings
held over two weeks between the Crown and iwi
whose water is directly affected by Mighty River Power.
The Waitangi Tribunal says
unique shares in partially owned power companies
should be given to those iwi and hapu directly affected.
Those shares should also take precedence over others.
The Crown will now go through all the iwi submissions.
Submissions close next week.
