Hundreds are expected to gather at Rangiriri tomorrow
for the 150th commemoration of one of the bloodiest battles
of the Waikato invasion.
Descendants of both Maori and Pakeha forces
that fought at the famous battleground
will stand shoulder to shoulder
in remembrance of the invasion of 861 British soldiers
against the second Maori king, Tawhio.
36 Maori and 38 colonial troops were killed.
Master carver Inia Te Wiata will also erect
two six metre carvings
as a symbol of endurance after colonisation.
