The goals of city square began some seven years ago, to reconnect our city, to make
it pedestrian friendly, recreate an intimate street an block pattern, with mixed uses such
as commercial, residential, entertainment, and retail for long-term sustainable economic
growth in our downtown, in our central district, and throughout the city. It is now my pleasure
to introduce our Lieutenant Governor and our friend, Timothy B. Murray.
People often take pride in what they build. Today I’m filled with optimism because we
are tearing something down. Over the years, as Mike mentioned, this mall has gone by many
names but it has never achieved the full success its 1960’s urban renewal planners had hoped.
The mall was built with good intentions, but it was a flawed concept from the start and
by tearing down this old mall to make way for CitySquare we begin to right a historic
wrong. It is now my pleasure to introduce a Governor that has been in Worcester in three,
nearly four years, than any governor has been ever, and he’s my friend, he’s our governor,
Governor of the Commonwealth Deval Patrick.
Thank you very
much. What an incredibly important day. It’s important for Worcester but it’s also important
for the whole of the commonwealth and I just wanted to be here to call attention to that.
Because this is an example of what happens when you blend optimism and effort. Hope and
hard work. And those themes have been at the center of our work over these last four years,
before and during the worst economic downturn in living memory. For folks who wonder whether
investments like this, whether public-private partnerships matter, ask the 300 people who
will be working to build this project whether it matters. None of this is just about words.
This strategy is making a difference in the commonwealth today. It’s the reason why
Massachusetts is growing at twice the national growth rate. It’s how we’ve added 60,000
jobs in the last six months alone. In July, the largest single monthly job gain in over
20 years. Its what in a second term we want to finish; to keep this pace going; why I
am so proud to be here. Thank you all for helping us be here at this moment today. Thank
you.
