This video shows how to properly clean the scanning glass, scanning strip, and ADF duplex
background on HP Scanjet Flatbed Scanners with an ADF.
These components should be cleaned periodically or any time a scanned image has streaks.
The scanner shown in this video is the HP Digital Sender Flow 8500 fn1 Document Capture
Workstation. Your scanner might appear different, but the
steps will be similar. Refer to your user manual for specific instructions.
Before you begin, gather the following cleaning materials:
Clean, lint-free or micro-fiber cloths. Liquid glass cleaner.
Clean, warm water. Use only glass cleaner to clean the scanning
glass and scanning strip. Avoid cleaners that contain abrasives, acetone,
benzene, and carbon tetrachloride, all of which can damage the scanning glass.
Avoid isopropyl alcohol because it can leave streaks on the glass.
To begin, press the Power button to turn off the scanner.
Turn to the back of the scanner and then disconnect the power cord.
Return to the front of the scanner. Open the scanning lid.
This is the flatbed scanning glass. This area is used when documents are copied with the
flatbed scanner. This is the ADF scanner strip. This area is
used when a document is copied through the ADF.
Clean the scanning glass and scanning strip with a soft, lint-free cloth that has been
sprayed with a mild glass cleaner. Spray the glass cleaner onto the cleaning
cloth. Never spray directly onto the glass. Gently rub the flatbed scanner glass and then
the ADF scanner strip with the moistened lint-free cloth.
After cleaning the scanner surfaces, dry the glass with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth.
This is the ADF calibration strip. Wipe the calibration strip with a soft, lint-free
cloth that has been moistened with warm water. Dry the calibration strip with a dry, soft,
lint-free cloth. Close the scanning lid, and then raise the
scan input tray until it is perpendicular to the scanner.
For this next step you will remove the ADF duplex background unit to clean it.
Press in on the ADF duplex background tabs to release the ADF duplex background, and
then pull it forward to remove the ADF duplex background from its housing.
Do not touch the rollers with your bare fingers while handling the ADF duplex background.
Set it aside for the moment. Inside the duplexer background compartment
is the ADF scan glass. The highlighting will help you locate it on your scanner.
To clean the ADF scan glass, spray glass cleaner on a clean, lint-free cloth, and then wipe
it clean. Do not get cleaner on the rollers.
After cleaning the ADF scan glass, dry the glass with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth.
Now you will clean the ADF duplex background. Wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth that
has been moistened with warm water. Dry the ADF duplex background with a dry,
soft, lint-free cloth. Slide the ADF duplex background back into
its housing until both tabs click into place. Lower the ADF input tray back into place.
Turn to the back of the scanner and reconnect the power cable.
Return to the front of the scanner. Press the Power button to turn on the scanner.
You are now ready to use your scanner as normal. You can find additional helpful videos at
