I'd like to say thank you, Tom,
for all the Navy's support for Open University students,
and particularly for arranging this competition
and for choosing for us the best Open University student.
The Open University have a competition
which they run with the Royal Navy.
It's an annual competition.
Anyone who's studying with the OU and serving in the Navy
is eligible to apply to join,
and the person who has the highest aggregate mark
at the end of the academic year is the winner.
So the director of students from the Open University
and the Navy represented by Lieutenant Commander Mills.
We're here to award the prize, the Navy prize.
I've really enjoyed my study with the Open University.
I've found it a very sort of challenging experience
but also a fun experience.
Martin, I'd like to congratulate you on winning the prize
as the best Open University Navy student this year.
We hope you enjoy this, and best of luck with your future.
Thank you very much.
I think it gives an awful lot of support
and I've enjoyed it to such an extent
that I've already decided I will be taking a further degree
with the Open University
when I complete my studies on this degree later this year.
The Open University is the largest supplier of this sort of education.
It has a tremendously high profile
and a huge reputation within the Naval Service.
All the tutors are very professional.
I've found them very friendly and very encouraging
to the work with I've done,
and I've managed to establish good relationships with many of them,
which has assisted with my study.
The sort of flexibility that the Open University can offer,
in terms of time and place of study,
fits very well with the lives of service people.
The Navy is very keen on lifelong learning
and the reason for that is the better educated people are,
the better they are able to conduct their daily professional jobs.
For someone else who wishes to study
from the Royal Navy at the Open University,
I would strongly recommend it
and have actually already done so to a number of colleagues.
