In food chains the path of energy transfer is indicated by arrows.
The arrow always points toward the eater.
When analyzing graphic organizers
that illustrate feeding relationships,
use the phrases "eaten by" or "supports" in place of the arrows.
For instance,
in this food chain
the grass converts light energy to chemical energy.
When the grass is eaten by the grasshopper,
the energy flows from the grass into the grasshopper.
When the grasshopper is eaten by the frog,
the energy flows from the grasshopper into the frog.
When the frog is eaten by the hawk,
the energy from the frog flows into the hawk.
Note that each time energy flows from one organism to another,
it is indicated by an arrow.
