Change of pace. I'm sure you've been bombarded with presentation since the beginning of the
orientation, so I'm going to change style here.
First of all, let me apologies for not being able to do this in person, but I'm an international
student, so I'm spending the holiday with my family. It is not 2007 people, so let's
use technology more, shall we? So what are we? We are the student chapter
of an international professional organization, pertaining to the field of electrical and
electronic engineering. Two keywords here: Professional, and Student.
Professionalism has long evolved since the concept was established and has somewhat diverged
from what it had started as. For example, in most companies, professionalism entitled
full formal suit, or semi-casual in some cases, but several companies, on top of which is
Google, is promoting a fully casual environment, but well mannered, nevertheless.
BUT, what almost all of the companies are looking for is an engineer who does his/her
job excellently. Professional skills are really important, do not get me wrong, but what is
even more important than that are technical skills, and that is what we mainly aim for.
We might have a few events in which your presence in a full suit is required, but most of our
events will be fun stuff. This year, we will be trying to go through the sane to the crazy
spectrum of events, so start warming up your imagination; we don't want it to get worn
easily. A quick peak, or rather a teaser of what we
are planning to do. 3D printer. Yes, we are in the process of getting a 3D printer kit,
which we will put together, to produce the university's first open-for-students 3D printer.
That means, not only would you guys, or whoever would like to participate, be going through
the exciting experience of actually assembling a 3D printer, but also, whoever would like
to use it, will be more than welcome to do so.
Also, we are currently working on the SHELL ECO MARATHON. Basically, we are building an
electric car to participate in regional-wide competition. Regional, that is, being the
whole content of Asia. Now this is a good travel opportunity to whoever would like to
participate. We will try to keep you busy with fun projects
throughout the year so stay tuned! Oh, in case you were wondering what IEEE Stands for,
it is an acronym of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Whoow! Now try
to say that quickly three time in a row! You should also students of any major are welcome,
but main theme, our main focus in events is electrical and electronic engineering. Oh,
and also, by the way, I believe I haven't introduced myself. I'm Sami Al-Terkawi, president
of the IEEE student chapter at Texas A&M University at Qatar. It was fun meeting you guys. See
you soon, and Welcome to Texas A&M University at Qatar.
And until then, please enjoy the following video, titled: Life without electrical engineering.
