we try
to develop the students as holistic students so when they leave the course they're work
ready
one of the things that we would always try to do is to make sure that students when
they graduate
don't graduate just with technical skills they need to be able to understand how
you use those skills
actually in an organisation outside of the university setting
the lecturers are definitely passionate about their subjects and the way that they teach
you can tell they're very knowledgeable, they're always bringing in case studies and real world
examples so you know that they themselves are doing
research in that area and that we're up-to-date and
informed about it the reason I chose economics at UWE is because it gave me the opportunity to
tailor my course toward a finance career its very
relevant and the course also teaches you to become a critical thinker which is extremely important
in
today's world the focus of our research really is very much
applied research and its interdisciplinary so it doesn't
pigeonhole topics into one specific area we realise we need to teach about the
global financial environment which draws from economics accounting and finance
we have a wide range of external partners
including significant links with the various accounting financial bodies
and these feed through very directly into our courses
the Bloomberg training room gives students a hands-on approach to looking at
the financial market
it will help them improve their technical skills especially when it comes to data
analysis
and looking at the fundamentals of companies
about half of our students go out on placement for a year they go to whole a
range of employers so alot of our Economics students for example
go to the Office of National Statistics and they go to the government economics service
and alot of the accounting and finance students
will find themselves with big financial employers around
in this region in many ways its like a year-long job interview
and its also a chance for them to actually experience the workplace and decide
if that's really where they want their career to go I think the point of the placement and
what UWE really encouraged me to do is go
out into the work environment and be confident in what they've
learnt at UWE and be able to put it into practice to try and get people more
employable we welcome students from UWE to Mitie because
they bring determination enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
they have a real-world job its a genuine position
we challenge and stimulate them during their time here
I had a really great placement at Hargreaves Lansdown its a FTSE 100
stockbroker in Bristol
and there I was really close to the financial markets
I was working on my teamwork skills my communication I regularly spoke to
clients
and I got to lead on certain projects as well there was a lot of support given by the
placement centre they were in constant contact
asking how things are going if there are any problems
what they could do to help us further the course here at UWE has given me a great insight
into finance it had equipped me with the skills to pursue a career in finance and has certainly
given me the
drive to succeed
