Hi, welcome to our new movie. This time we are going to make something very special
Look, my Golf has a new registration plate. It is now officaly a classic car
As present for its 30th anniversary we'll overhaul the rear bench seats
For this repair we need new covering textile, carpet material and special glue
All the material I obtained from the car saddler shop Rapp. My thanks to Mrs. Rapp for her great help in finding the original materials
Here you see the effect of the sun on our rear seat bench
The fabrics is completly broken up
Remove the 2 mechanical stops
The upper and lower part of the bench seat are separated at this bolt
I remove the bolt
The washer is in between the two parts
The same at the other side
Separate the boot lid from the seat
The boot lid is fastened by 5 Phillips srews
Remove the screws from the rail
The short screws are in between the holder, and the long screws are in the stoppers
The rail has 2 arcs on the outer side and is just on the carpet
Here are 3 rivets in the carpet and the straps have rivets, too
The edge covers are only slipped
Also the end-rail is slipped on the lid and fixes the carpet
After some punches you can just pull the end-rail
The fabrics is just clamped under the frame
The same applies for the imitation leather
Be careful and work around the frame
Now you can pull the fabrics from the core
Remove the metal frame
You see how the fabrics is fixed to the core
Here is the other end
Such wires are here
There are 4 wires in longitudinal direction and 2 wires in transversal direction
All wires are hooked in the same way
Use pliers to remove the wires
Here the tunnel is already broken
Remove the wires from the fabrics
This part goes now to the seamstress
Now it is at the seamstress
The disassembly of the back of seats works in the same way
The reinforcement here is clamped under the frame
The same at the sides but here you'll need more force
Just work around
and we have the whole textile cover
Remove the frame carefully from the foam and all is disassembled
The rest of the job is for the editor
Now she will unstitch all parts
Use such a special tool for slitting the seams
The separated parts of the fabrics
The reinforcement is such strong that it would be impossible to sew it with a normal machine
Thus we cut the fabrics here and we'll sew all together to the new fabrics
The line will be the border between old and new fabrics
Cut it with the scissors
and the fabrics is damaged forever
Best you use a long scissor for following the line
Before cutting we are ironing the fabrics
At the back of the seat the old fabrics is seriously damaged
We put the right side on the right side, thus we can follow the pattern
Cut all the pieces. I feel like in the handicraft lesson in school
As backing of the fabrics we use a vliseline
Copy the shape of all pieces on the vliseline
Cut all the pieces and write the number on them
Put the vliseline piece precisely on the fabrics piece
Press it at every place with the steam iron for 15 seconds. Don't push the iron
Arrange all parts and tack them together
Now we are doing the sewing
Use a seam allowance of 10 mm
Use a needle 100 and a thread 110, meaning a thick needle and a thick thread
Step by step you get an idea of the final shape
Mark the position for the webbing straps
Stick the needle and you'll have the position on the other side
Use a washable glue for tacking the leather
On the leather are marks which must fit absolutely to the marks on the fabrics
The leather has a small hole and the fabrics a small triangle
and use a clip to fix it
Average the difference in radius and glue it together
The first clip in the middle and half of the difference is on either side
Use a leather needle for sewing the parts together
The strip between the leather and the fabrics
Sew the reinforcement with the rest of old fabrics on the new fabrics
Because the old fabrics is rather sticky, we use a piece of paper
Sew all together and remove the paper
and the new textile cover is finished
We are covering our seat with new fabrics
Insert the wires in the latches
Start in the middle
Just install wire by wire
and fine
Bring the cover in shape
Looks like brand new, isn't it?
Insert the metal frame
This part comes here, just fold it once under the frame
The rear wall of the seat was covered by a black foil. We couldn't conserve it
We use black imitation leather instead
Coat both surfaces with a contact glue and press the parts together
Cut the additional material from the edges
So the rear wall is finished we can assemble all parts
Insert the rear wall in the frame
Take care that the rear wall is under these holders
Mount all the wires
What do say now, no folds, the grain, all is perfect
Put the seat on the front side
Mount the two parts of the seat together. The seat part is inside, then the washer and the seat rear
Fasten all with the bolt
We'll try to drill out the rivets from the cover lid
I'll start with the outer rivet
I will use drills with increasing diameter
I start with 3 mm
and the rivet is off
I mark the border line of the carpet
Here the carpet protrudes the cover by 70 mm
Sand the lower side
at some places I used a filler
Mask the place for the carpet with paper and tape
First I spray a primer and filler
and then the black color
The painted cover lid looks better than original
The glue for the carpet I bought also at saddler shop Rapp
I cut a fitting piece of carpet
To press it in shape I made a special wood plate in the same shape and I put some lead bricks on it
Because we are working with a contact glue we'll have only one trial
Coat both surfaces of one field with the glue
Press it together
After the contact time of 45 minutes I remove the wood plate
The carpet follows perfectly the shape of the cover lid
Because we have no press mould for the whole lid, we have to glue field by field
After glueing one field we put all mass on it and we are waiting 45 minutes
Finally I put on the end rail
Cut the carpet precisely at the marked line
After glueing the carpet on the cover lid, we can put the end rail on
Now we have to set new rivets
One side is open one side is covered
For the covered side I found this rivet set in my collection
For the open side I made a special stamp on the lathe
Use a hollow punch to make a small hole in the carpet
Insert the rivet in the hole
Set the rivet
The caps for the endrail
Cut the carpet to have enough place for the cap
Insert the draws for the lid in the end caps
Cut the carpet 70 mm out of the lid
Install the rail in the correct distance to the stoppers
Start from the mid. Here we make the first hole
Put a piece of softwood under the carpet and make a small hole for the screw with the hollow punch
Align the rail parallel to the lid
and mark the position of the holes
The plastic stopper is on top, the strap between the rail and carpet
Postition the lid to the seat and set a screw
Fasten all 5 screws
Now also the lid is finished
Bring the seat in the car
Put the latches on the small shafts
and the second one
Mount the security clip on the small shaft
If it turns freely, the security clip is placed correctly
Push all security belts through the seats
All is fine and the boot lid is in place, too
This was quite a different video - but it shows you, a man can achieve everything, as long the editor lady is helping him
Bye, bye see you in our next video
