Hey, my name is Nick from Trickhand.
On request of this comment, I'm going to explain the Thumb Fan.
So let's begin.
Fan -
explanation
Before I explain how to perform the Thumb Fan
I'm going to tell something about the cards to use.
It's important that you don't use plastic playing cards.
You can use any type of cards as long as it's based on paper material.
You can use these Bicycles for example
I'm going to explain the Thumb Fan using two hands.
It looks like this.
That is the Thumb Fan with two hands.
How can you do this?
Imagine giving someone a handshake with your left hand.
Close your fingers.
And move your thumb to the center of the inner side.
And keep the hand in this position.
Where you're going to place the cards...
is at these two fingers
you're going to align the bottom part of the deck.
Place the deck in the fork of your thumb.
Hold the deck with your left thumb
at the bottom right corner. And use this as a pivoting point.
I'll start by explaining you how to make a Thumb Fan.
And then I'm giving you some tips on how to make the fan bigger and rounder.
The Thumb Fan goes as follows.
Keep your hand in this position the entire time.
Use your right hand to stroke the cards, making the fan.
Make a rotating movement.
It looks as follows.
It's not as easy to perform slow
This is just for explanation purposes.
If you give a little pressure with your thumb
The cards can be more equal apart.
What you might bump into in the beginning
is when you make the fan
that this corner is getting stuck at the base of your thumb.
So when practising it's easier to start with two cards
So that you can practise with the corner, this corner,
That this corner ends in the base of your thumb.
It looks like this.
Grip the upper left corner with your thumb.
And make the rotation.
And make sure that this corner ends through the base of your thumb.
If you master this
try to do it with the entire deck. In the beginning it will be difficult.
It was also difficult for me first.
You don't create pretty fans in the beginning. It's going to look like this maybe.
Please don't get discouraged. Keep practising. Keep doing this move.
It keeps looking better in time.
How do I get this fan this big and round?
What I said about the position of the deck
is to hold it like this.
But to get the fan bigger
tilt the deck to the left.
So the cards are not perpendiculair
but they are tilted to the left.
Keep the left hand in the same position
You only tilt the cards to the left.
If you now make the fan it will get bigger and rounder.
This fan wasn't so nice.
This one's a lot better. It can even get slightly bigger.
How to close the fan.
What I found the easiest method
is using your index finger
and close it like this.
Another way to close the fan
is by using these two fingers. Your middle finger and thumb.
Place these at both ends
and let them meet each other.
Making sound effects is very important.
So uhm. Yes.
It looks like that.
What you even can do
If you want to apply a technique with a fan.
Is to follow the fan by an...
All-Around Square-Up.
This way you can also know the bottom card. Three of Hearts, right?
The way I often use to close the fan. Is the One Handed Closure.
I'm going to explain how I do this.
What I do, I use my middle finger
to create a second pivoting point.
I do it like this
I curl the middle finger and use the index finger
to give the cards a push.
If you give the cards a push you can see the fan close.
I'm going to perform it slower. Slow it doesn't look as nice but...
it's easier for explanation purposes .
You see?
Normally I don't do this. It's going a little automatic.
Normally the gravity is doing its work just fine.
I'm going to close the fan a bit faster now.
You can see that the push is enough to close the entire fan.
So use your index finger to push the cards pretty hard.
And you may release the rest of your fingers.
The fan will close like this.
That's a way to do this.
So one more time.
This was the close at regular speed.

If you practise the fan it's a lot handier to use a new deck of cards.
With an older and worn out deck the fan will not go as easy. This might give some frustration while practising it.
Don't expect to master this at once. Just keep practising
If you keep on practising you will notice improvements.
If you're having difficulties. Re-watch the video.
Pause at the right moments
and if you keep practising it will work.
For the magicians. If you have advice to improve the fan. Please leave that advice in the comments.
So with a question or an advice, let it know in the comments.
See you in the next one.
Do you know what it's called when your hungry for stars? - Well? - Star Hungry.
This is something for after the outro.
chuckles
Nick I can't keep it up.
