Hello! My name is Michael Dobie; I’m the dietician with Wellness and Lifestyles.
Today I want to talk to you about weight loss in aged care and some of the challenges and some of the opportunities we have in aged care.
And as a dietician visiting a lot of different facilities, it’s one of the main referrals that I would get.
People that have loss a lot of weight unintentionally and we need to try and build them up.
Now there’s no doubt that it’s much, much more effective to get hold of this people early
and prevent it before it becomes a big problem.
So it’s one of the main focuses of today’s session.
We want to look firstly, what malnutrition is.
How it can be identified and then what we can do to improve the outcomes of our residents.
So, studies are showing that nearly 1 in every 2 residents is going to be at risk of malnutrition.
So it’s a massively common problem.
Let me go back at research of the last couple of decades… not much has changed.
So it’s been an issue and hasn’t been improving.
