The legendary pokemon Yveltal, Xerneas, and Zygarde are based on the Norse creation myth
of the world tree, Yggdrasil. In the myth the tree connects the three realms (X, Y,
and Z) with its roots, and each world is home to a guardian creature, which are an eagle,
a deer, and a wurm.
Unlike previous games, the Kalos region is based on modern-day France instead of a region
of Japan. This marks the second core game to have a region based on a foreign country,
as Black & White's Unova was based on New York City.
While most of the core mechanics remain intact, the addition of an IV-cloning Destiny Knot
has made competitive breeding much easier for those involved in the metagame. The discovery
of this breeding trick was not made until a week after release, when art director Junichi
Masuda revealed the mechanic over twitter.
