we talk a lot about
in the last couple years a what can happen books and cover designers a
covers are necessarily gonna be the focus anymore but
what I found is were actually looking for new ways
to present our box gives people the opportunity to
have something to hold onto that is not available in digital form
my name is Helen Yentus, I'm the Art Director for Riverhead Books
we have a number amazing authors that we work with
so what we try to do is provide distinctive packages with
a normal additions and then from time to time come up with something that
goes be on that something that is obviously special limited and
in that way where really not bound by what are limitations are within normal
jacket with chairing this is a book
that i think is pretty different for him from what the previous books for about
it takes place in the future so there really isn't a lot of visual like the
tire for you could be on in this case
I thought the original cover was absolutely perfect
you know graphically really interesting it
just captured the the feeling on the protagonist
and then when I saw the 3d cover I thought it was right
because it was much sleeker and the design was very clean
many more futuristic I thought it was a nice companion
version to the first one by working with MakerBot we were actually able to do
something I am just
distinctive in two dimensions home team up with agree
typography for the case for the book and what we sculpted
that goes around it really continues the topography
into a three-dimensional format so it really comes right off for the cover of
the book
lane and I went back and forth quite a bit
expect in Pansol did my best to try and render what I think it could look like
in a meeting with and back
on his team within me back renderings to this is my very first kinda rough sketch
idea
our farm building a dimensional cover for the book
the layers with sort of build up will come out and
and make the letters I'm this is one of my later sketches
here the letters would come out up the top and then these
comments lines would be kind what topographic
layers but the tricky thing was how would these layers actually interact and
I think in the end it became a little bit too complicated
here this is a full case and the letters would come
out on the surface here and then move into the surface meeting hall
picture is just amazingly geometric
typefaces just its based on circles in
and squares and in this case I think I was trying to do something else i'm
geometric going away and it
I think it went after this string
what I like about this is that it be visits the book as an object
rather than content only come to
I mean the content is what's most important ultimately a person
by working in a way it never worked before
with material they never worked before its or forced me to think about
the process different me and use the technology
to allow us to really experiment with
the limits of what a traditional covers
