I'd like to talk briefly about using your style when you present. When I went through
the list of credible presenters, when you think about those people, again, Oprah Winfrey,
Barack Obama, Lee Iaccoca, John F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King, they all have very
distinct styles. You may not even be able to put a word to that style but they each
have a very clear way of being in the world. Now the fact is each of us, every one of us,
has a very clear way of being in the world. We may not be aware of our own way of being
in the world but everybody else is aware of it. The trick to being an excellent presenter
is to rid yourself of nervous habits, fiddling with pens, moving around too much, standing
at the wrong stance. Whatever. Rid yourself of bad habits so that your style can come
through. If you know what your own style is. If you have a sense of that, all the better.
Now let me give you an idea of what some people's styles are. Here's an ironic one. One style
that works very well with audiences is the style of the calm quiet person. People who
are calm and quiet and present very well are very listenable. People will actually lean
forward a bit to listen to them. Fell very drawn in. You know what it's like when you
think somebodies telling a secret. You want to hear it.
