Hi, this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village. I'm here to talk to you about handling
competition when you're promoting your show. Now, unfortunately, competition is something
you are going to have to deal with. Other bands are going to play the same night as
you. Other acts are going to offer something similar to what you are offering. You're going
to have to find a way to get people to come to your show and not someone else's. Competition
can also bring out the best in you, because it forces you to think about what you can
offer that no one else can. So, when you discover there's competition use it as a way of advertising
your best traits. Play to your strengths, see what makes you different. Don't think
about the negative stuff. Don't badmouth the other bands because that won't get you anywhere.
All you are really doing if you badmouth another band is offering them some sort of promotion
as well. Think about what makes you better then push that. For example, if you're doing
a show the same night as somebody else, and they're trying to put together a similar kind
of show, show why you're going to be doing something better than what they are doing.
Do it by providing examples. People like familiarity so give your potential audience a chance to
feel familiar with you. Give them lots of information about what you're providing. That
way they'll feel like you are a safer bet to go to than some other band that they don't
really know quite as much about. Remember that competition doesn't have to hurt you.
It's a way to make you excel and bring out your best strengths.
