Hi, my name is Julie Koeberle and I work for the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation
Service. I work for the Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting program in Oregon as a
hydrologist. On February 1 streamflow forecasts for the summertime look somewhat similar to
January 1st streamflow forecasts, and that is east of the Continental Divide we're expecting
summer streamflows to be near average or better throughout the summer; west of the Continental
Divide we're looking at extremely dry conditions well below normal streamflow conditions for
the summer. Forecasts have decreased since last month, and that's just because we've
had a lack of snowfall and precipitation for the month of January. California is in a state
of emergency, expecting extremely dry summer. Parts of Oregon are also extremely dry - especially
southern Oregon and we're examining now the status of drought conditions for many counties
in southern Oregon. On February 1 there were a lot of record low snowpacks, especially
parts of southern Oregon and California. The chances of recovering to a normal snowpack
at this point are slim. We do have time to catch up in the season.
