A second round of talks aimed at bringing peace to Syria got off to a shaky start in
Geneva on Monday as hundreds of civilians continued to flee the besieged city of Homs
under an extended humanitarian deal agreed between the
Syrian government and the UN. UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has been
holding separate meetings with the government and opposition delegations to try to set an
agenda for the coming week. Little progress is expected as the two sides
continue to disagree on the core issue of President Bashar al-Assad's future role in
Syria. The talks come as the UN and aid agencies
continue efforts to help thousands of people trapped in Homs.... who now have until Wednesday
to try and get out. Also, in Syria, the international watchdog
overseeing the elimination of the regime's chemical weapons stockpile says one third
of the arsenal has now left the country.
