The death toll from a devastating mudslide in Washington state has risen, as yet more
bodies have been found.
Rescue workers have recovered two bodies and believe they have located eight more.
The discovery of more victims from the mudslide, which smashed through dozens of homes on Saturday,
came as crews searched under drizzly skies in the hope that any survivors could be plucked
alive from the huge pile of muck and debris.
We continued our search and recovery operation on the entire slide area. Unfortunately, we
didn't find any signs of life. We didn't locate anybody alive.
We recovered two fatalities today, so that would bring the fatality rate to 16. We believe
we've located another 8, so we're going to stick with the number of 16 right now until
those others are located and brought back to the medical examiner.
More than 100 people remain listed as missing three days after the disaster, when a rain-soaked
hillside collapsed in the residential area of Oso, sweeping away much of the village.
Though authorities have said the chances were low of finding any more survivors in the mud
blanketing the area, the district fire chief said 50 more searchers had been brought in
to sift through the disaster zone, in the hopes of a miracle.
