[Veterans Success Center]
[Sound of helicopter]
>> I love the life, I love the structure. I felt part of something bigger than myself.
It was definitely, again, a culture shock getting back into, introduced into civilian
society. You feel a little bit of an emptiness, I
guess, just being used to around the military structure, people, you know, typically in
the same field of serving in the military compared to civillian life and a lot of people
don't really relate to that. So, when I got here, at Sac State, I wanted, I wanted to
find bets, so that was one of my top priorities to see what kind of program they have here
for veterans. That's when I met the director, Jeff Weston.
>> We're really trying to recreate the experience that veterans had in the military. It's a
place that you can come have lunch, or you can come work on your homework. There's dedicated
computers for student veterans and their families to just work and
study.
>> And, the vets center, somebody had told me about it and I've called them and they
were so friendly and they invited me and they helped me out. And, if it wasn't for the vets
center, I wouldn't be at Sac State right now. They helped me get my admission
done and everything
>> The vets center provided me the information, the details, the aspects of what I need to
do, what is offered for vets. What can I apply for, you know, so on and so forth. Programs
that benefit veterans that I didn't know before that they informed me.
>> We help with everything from the processing of the G.I. Bill to having a dedicated admissions
counselor to helping create future leaders and folks that are going to go on past their
time at the university and go on to great things.
>> One of the distinguishing marks about our program is that we offer programs and services
that help student veterans navigate the various transitions they face during a college career.
We help them get through the door with pre-admission counseling
and academic advising. We help them make way towards the degree duirng their second, third
and fourth year with us and then towards the end of their
college degree, we help them create that pathway to a civilian career.
[TLC No Scrubs. No way. Laughter. You would know that one.]
>> This is their piece of the campus and ultimately, you know, this is going to be their alma mater.
>> That center's a very good program, I like it. I think it's very beneficial for vets
and it's an asset to vets, the students and just the overall campus.
>> When you're trying to start college, it's a new thing. You've already been trained in
a job. I've already worked doing something, you know, now I'm getting re-training and
I'm older. You know and I've already lived things that people might not
have lived. So, with the vet center, they understand that. They know that I'm coming
in with some experience and they treat me with respect, they treat me like, you
know, a fellow friend and that I'm welcome here.
>> It's been an amazing journey and we're very thankful this upcoming Veterans Day that
we're in the position that we're in.
