ANNOUNCER: From our neighbourhood to yours, this is...
I'm Leona Emberson for Accessible Media.
Writing a letter to Santa is Christmas tradition
for many children.
But what if you are blind and read and write in Braille?
Well, Santa Claus, who travels across the world in one night
visiting all the little boys and girls is prepared.
He knows Braille.
It's really important that Santa has the means
to communicate with all children.
LEONA: Santa's elf, Sharlyn Ayotte,
helps Santa respond to Braille letters.
He reads all of the letters.
He tells us how he wants us to respond.
And then, we respond for him.
LEONA: Bianca Borgila is preparing to write her letter to Santa.
Have you written a letter to Santa before?
Yes.
And this year, how are you going to write to Santa?
In Braille.
LEONA: Bianca describes the tactile picture
she includes in her letter.
BIANCA: A Christmas tree and a little wave.
And the date and my name.
LEONA: How do you think Santa learned to write in Braille?
Maybe one of his elves were blind
and then teach Santa Braille.
MAN: Bianca and the reporter, Leona, sit at a table
as Bianca types on a Braille machine.
LEONA: 1, 3, 6 is you.
1, 3, 6?
LEONA: Mmm-hmm.
Hold it still, let me write.
LEONA: Oh, you just had enough room.
Letters to Santa must be posted by December 17th.
Elf Sharlyn tells us how.
SHARLYN: What you do is you write your letter and you send it off
to Santa Claus, North Pole, HOHOHO and it'll get there.
He'll read it and he'll send you back a letter.
LEONA: Be sure to include your return address,
so Santa can write you back.
