Now let us take a look at an equation that has been written for
a simple chemical reaction.
In this example, sodium and chlorine react chemically,
which results in the product sodium chloride,
or what is commonly referred to as rock salt.
Again, the reactants are on the left and
the products are on the right.
The yields symbol separates the two and
indicates the direction of the reaction.
In chemistry,
words and images are not used to express reactants and products.
Chemical symbols and formulas are used.
In this case, sodium is expressed as 2 Na and
chlorine is expressed as Cl2.
The result of the reaction is 2NaCl.
