One of the benefits of having an
alumni networking session for students
is partly it gets them talking to people who have been through
the process before
who have done the course and who are offten working in a range
different careers. Sometimes it can be easy for student to get an idea about what they
might want to do
but my not necessarily see what's realistic
or what kinds of jobs specifically they can apply to when the graduate
I think people are graduating at the moment into
a really tough employment market and I think
employers are looking now for more than just good grades and I think coming to
events like this
help people to see how other people have gone about doing things
may pick up some tips and I've just been speaking to a girl about
applying for VAC scemes for law and I think things like that and just being able to speak
to students to get their insight and their understanding of
and the world of work and how you can go about
applying for things or getting further postgraduate information
I think the benefits a really starting with the fact
of being here a to be actively thinking
about you know what will i do when i graduate
in a year one-and-a-half whatever time it is
I think that's a starting point. And then
talking to people who have left 2-3 years ago I think it's quite helpful
because it just shows people that
trajectories can be really really different
and kind of takes away, i don't want to say fear
but kinda weariness about you know like where will i go next
because you can just say okay other people had the same struggles
and now they're okay now the doing well now ther're on their way or
they've realized important things in the past.
I don't recall having the oppourtunity to have this myself
and I think when I was in my final yeah I really didn't I want
luckily the careers services was there to help
but I think I would have really benefited something like this
being able to learn what previous students have going on to do in various
different lines of work and careers I think would have really helped
maybe narrow my focus or give me an idea about something i'd not even heard or considered about
I think students benefit a lot from meeting people from different careers
to see how people have ended up, where they are
how they got there, what challenges they faced and how they overcome these
challenges as well
so I hope students take away from
today that there is no one path and you have a lot of oppourtunities ahead of you
which you can find out about at Birmingham.
