Hi students, and welcome to another unit on Storyboarding.
In this unit, we will focus on the benefits of storyboarding.
Now that all of you have started storyboarding,
these reported benefits may come to life for you,
or may not.
You may be really enjoying this process, or really hating it.
It is quite detailed and creative work, as you are inventing the future.
However, inventing can be arduous process,
requiring a lot of concentration, time and attention to detail.
Thus, some would regard this as the pitfalls of storyboarding
and may think it's okay to skip it altogether.
Analysis Questions.
As we commence this module,
I would like you in your tutorial group and in WebKF
to explore the following questions.
What do you think are the benefits of storyboarding?
What do you think are the pitfalls of storyboarding?
In your opinion, do the benefits outweigh the pitfalls of storyboarding?
If so, how might you resolve them?
Reported Benefits of Storyboarding.
It has been argued that the storyboarding technique
encourages designers to, quote,
“examine, analyze, conceptualize and communicate the different steps",
unquote, "involved in creating the final product."
Reeder, 2005, argues that storyboarding can help designers to, quote,
“better understand the broad scope of, of product development,
as well as the broad value of designing the details,
while still considering the overall objective for the product." Unquote.
Another Reported Benefit of Storyboarding.
Storyboarding also allows the user to, quote,
“experiment with changes in the storyline
to evoke stronger reaction or interest." Unquote.
For example, flashbacks result in the sorting of storyboards
out of chronological order to help build suspense and interest.
This process of, quote, “visual thinking," unquote,
as it is called, allows a group of people
to brainstorm together, placing their ideas on storyboards
and then arranging the storyboards on the wall
or other technological interface.
This has been found to foster more ideas
and generate consensus inside the group.
Reported Benefits of Storyboarding for Novices.
It has been argued by many that novices,
otherwise called students or learners,
often have difficulty transferring their research ideas into technical products.
When d- when novices delineate their research information
in the form of a visual storyboard,
they're bet- they're better able to visually- visualize
how, how the research information
can impact the success of the product- the project
and result in the innovative pro- product solution.
Reported Benefits of Storyboarding for Professionals.
Storyboards are great for a collaboration,
and allow teachers, learners and researchers
to work together to form great ideas.
Storyboards also allow and support, quote,
“graphically disparate design teams.” Unquote.
As Jane- as Jones, 2008, calls them, "to work together."
Synthesis Questions.
As we bring this module to a closure,
I would like you to discuss the following questions
in your tutorial group and in WebKF.
What are the reported benefits of storyboarding for novices,
example, students or learners,
and for experts, example, professionals?
How are they similar?
How are they different?
How might storyboarding help a novice to become an expert
or to acquire expertise in technical product development?
As you think through these questions,
I would like you to reflect on the process
by which you are doing your collaborative storyboarding
with your professional group.
Good luck, and thank you.
