This morning we had a breakfast seminar around the oil and gas industry in Australia
The market for gas engines has significantly increased over a period of time
Today was a good platform to discuss about Shell Technology leadership and which lubricants
are right for that sector and it was great to see that the key stakeholders were present
from the key gas market in Australia
We had a guest speaker from GE Walkinshaw presenting around their products in relation
to lubricants
We play heavily in the industrial commercial sector, as well as to a degree in the oil
and gas sector.
My presentation is basically in the lube oils section is going to mimic what you have already
been presented.
We could with what other developments we are doing and at the same time understand their
operational issues, kind of operational setup they have.
I would say it's kind of a win-win situation for both the parties, the customers as well
as for us.
The key point we try to bring over in the presentation this morning is not the standard
oil recommendation for gas compressors.
It's all about process conditions, equipment types, setup of the equipment and then in
close preparation with the customer and the technical services of Shell will result in
the final recommendation of a product.
To be working in extreme high ambient temperature areas, you go to Algerian desert, or to northern
Kuwait or Iraq, and 55 degrees Celsius is daily life.
And the engine operates in that environment. It affects lube oil at the end of the day.
We firmly believe Shell is not only an oil supplier, we consider ourselves as a partner
to our customer, and we always work with the approach of a solution provider.
If we really compare the available product in the market, the product is doing a wonderful
job, but for us it is not the only solution.
We are now actually now looking for the next generation of lubricant and of course we are
also thinking of ideas other lubricants can bring in any benefit for the fuel efficiency
My message to all the machine users is that you really need to look at lubricant, care
for lubricant when you are making a selection, because it is one component that may be negligible
in cost in the beginning but can result in massive savings by optimizing operation of
your machines.
In oil, we work with all the oil companies, we work with Shell closely in developing oils,
but their knowledge from a technical perspective is much higher than ours.
The future is all about the high efficiency, high temperature operational engine.
Now the OEM tell us OK for this application, can you produce a low ash product.
And I am happy to say last year we launched a dedicated product which is a low ash lubricating
oil for acidic gas applications.
The first observations about the Australian team is that they are very enthusiastic and
passionate and they have a very good learning attitude, and when I look at the technical
team as well as the sales team how jointly they are working together I think that is
the kind of collaboration we need and is key to the successful business for Shell.
So customer preference and customer attitude drives what is needed.
I think what the rest of the world can learn from Australia is that Australia is very open
minded to get knowledge and experience from other parts of the world.
The speed of development of the business in Australia is so high.
The industry operates in a very professional way.
The kind of setup they are managing, the kind of maintenance they are doing to their plant
it looks extremely professional, and I think that I can say with full confidence that they
are far away from any country in terms of managing their assets.
So Shell has experience of operation of gas sites, Shell has experience on application,
and Shell has experience on the development of lubricants also.
I think that makes a very comprehensive value proposition which can be offered to customers
knowing that we can maintain these three areas .
That's the plan in the future, as and when the market grows, so we are looking to improve
our value proposition based on the experiences we are gaining within Shell itself.
