How to Find Journals:
In this video, you will learn how to locate specific journals through the Catalyst search
engine and how to access and search through online copies of these journals of interest.
To begin, we will start on the library homepage, "library.jhu.edu." In the Catalyst box here,
we are going to change our "Search By" option to "Journal." This will allow us to
search only for journals and not articles or books of the same topic. In the search
box, we will put "education." After we hit "Submit," we are redirected to this
page. As you can see, the results given include both print and online resources. Since we
are only interested in an online copy, we will check this box near the top marked, "show
only items available online," and hit "Search" again. This will focus our search to only
contain online resources.
Our search results show us that there are various journals related to the topic of education.
Clicking on the link to the first result redirects us to this page. Over here on the right, we
see the various online databases that hold online copies of the journal. Before just
selecting a database at random, be sure to check the dates. As you can see, EBSCOhost
Academic Search Complete has the most comprehensive collection dating back to 1969. However, if
you are only interested in more recent articles, ProQuest and Gale each have copies from the
last 10 years.
Clicking on EBSCOhost Academic Search Complete will take us to the EBSCO database. On the
right, we see a list of all the volumes of the journal dating back to 1969. Clicking
on a specific volume allows us to see all the articles published in that particular
volume.
Returning to the EBSCO publications page, we can use the option on the top right, "Search
within this publication." Clicking on this link redirects us to the search page. Here
we see that our search has already been limited to the journal, Education. We can now put
in our keyword, "special education" in the second search box. This allows us to search
within our publication for any articles related to our keyword.
In summary, remember that Catalyst allows you to locate a specific journal from a variety
of different fields. Use the online databases to further narrow your search with keywords
and Boolean terms.
