In many ways "Chinatown Kid" is a significant movie
For example, in the west it is widely regarded as one of the best Fu Sheng movies
And it was the first movie to credit Fu Sheng with his christian name Alexander
Besides, it was the first film to feature all five "Venoms"
Sun Chien, fifth "Venom", made his movie debut here
In terms of a script "Chinatown Kid" obviously mirrors "Disciples of Shaolin"
It's a similar story about a naive boy
Who bonds with some wrong people and gradually becomes a wanted criminal
Fu Sheng' character here even has a couple of fetishes
Just like he had in "Disciples of Shaolin"
Symbols of a rich, luxury lifestyle
This time it's a stylish sunglasses and electronic wristwatch
If you already saw "Disciples of Shaolin", "Chinatown Kid"'s plot won't probably surprise you
Sure, it introduces some additional characters
And the background is not a China but modern San Francisco
But the main story arc is left unchanged
However, this unoriginality can't spoil the movie as a whole
As a proverb goes, if the story is good it doesn't hurt to listen to it twice
Worth a mention that there are at least two different versions of "Chinatown Kid"
One is complete two hours cut and second is trimmed down to an hour and a half
The strange thing is that in China the movie is released on DVD in the latter
And this cut was the only one that got a full remastering
It misses out some key scenes
Mostly tied to a gangster played by Tsai Hung
And features completely different ending
Uncut version sees Fu Sheng' character dying but in the short one he's only arrested by the police
