I studied construction project management at the Barlett, I graduated
in 2012 with a distinction and I now work as a project manager in cooling the tube
as part of London underground. Part of my role role as a project manager is to visit site
and monitor contractor's progress on our worksites. I work on a project
called Out of Service Fans where we return ventilation shafts and fans
back into service assets that have been out of service for a really really long time
and haven't been maintained
and each time we put one back into service they lower the temperatures across
certain sections of the network and reduce the risk of heat strain to our customers.
The course at the Bartlett is advertised as part of the graduate scheme
for project management at TFL
it's an optional sponsored course that you can take so
I attended some discussions with the course director and decided that it
sounded right up my street, it combines
all the theory as well as a lot of practical study and learning which I
thought would be really beneficial to my my work and my future career outside
of London Underground.
I was really impressed that at the Bartlett the lecturers there have a really
good combination of practical work experience, they worked in that industry for a long time so
during the lectures you'll get a really really broad range of kind of knowledge
that spans all of the theory and the research and reading that they've done as well as
examples of when they actually worked in the industry like I think one of the lecturers has
worked on the channel tunnel project and had loads of really
interesting kind of anecdotes and things to tell about it and I thought that
was really useful. Every time I meet new graduates coming in to TFL
I always advise them to study this Masters course
I think that the experience and knowledge you gain is invaluable, it makes you
a much better project manager in the long run and and although it's hard work
it's definitely worth it.
