Sweets Tales
Today's tale is of the strongest ally for when you're feeling a bit hungry:Senbei (rice crackers).
Mirin-do is as shop that came from the birthplace of senbei, Soka, to Tokyo
At the front of the shop, Takuto demonstrates how to grill traditional senbei by hand.
It smells good.
Takuto only started making senbei two years ago. Behind this decision was a slightly compelling reason.
Tokyo Skytree, which appeared right outside of his shop.
I was a regular office worker. It feels like my new career was born together with Skytree.
The current owner can be found in the back of the shop.
Third generation owner of Mirin-do, Nobuyoshi Takahashi has been making senbei for 40 years.
Nobuyoshi works with this hot iron oven for six hours a day.
Here he makes "Gachinko (serious fight) Senbei", associated with the professional sumo wrestling of Sumida-ku, Tokyo.
It's not a fight, I actually devote a lot of attention to them. I treat them very carefully.
For Nobyuoshi, gachinko means keep calm and do good work.
Using a soy sauce coating unchanged since the 90s, these senbei are made with meticulous care.
Takuto, who has newly entered the ranks, is learning the trade well.
So long as Skytree is there...
Aim to be the Yokozuna! Put some spirit into it! Not yet! Not yet!
