Okay so let's have a little practice with some portraits, now I've got a
ancient monument here
and all these arch ways and all these different little corners they've got the most exciting
pools of light.
If you don't have an ancient monument
it doesn't really matter you can use the doorway of the garden shed,
you can use the porch and i'll show you in a minute
but first of all what we need is a model and today i'm super duper lucky,
because I've got Deb's.
Hello Debs, hiya, are you alright?,
I've known Deb's since i was fifteen and to this very day i still
go of dirt motor cycling with her husband Ian.
Come on then debs let's have a go, so first
of all let's see what happens when the light's out here, this is stuff i want you guys to do alright?
Go and practice, this isn't about getting it right,
this is just about practicing and then looking at the pictures to see what happened.
So,
right on one leg debs, come on.
You've got a great figure, show it off.
But i'm only going to go head to shoulders. Now out here in this light,
the lights coming pretty much straight out, now actually can you come away from the building
a little,
that's better.
The light's coming straight down, let's do some
pictures of debs face here.
So relax,
excellent, look at you, you look fantastic as always.
There we go, now as you can see in this image
debs has got really quite dark eyes,
her laughter lines are really prominent.
Now let's go to the arch way,
just step back inside a bit, whoa about there.
Go to your, that way a bit more, sorry too much
that way that way that way a tiny bit, there.
Now with debs under the arch what's happening is
this arch is blocking the light which is coming straight down
when she was out here.
So the light that is lighting deb is coming in from the front now this doesn't
matter if it was a sunny day or a dull day it is a similar thing.
Slightly differently if it was more sunny because we'd have reflections of the pavement
but
here we go, move back a bit.
Take a picture of debs in here,
hey babes, look at you.
Oh i got a man in a blue shirt right behind you,I'll do it again,
there we go.
Now look straight away you can see that
debs features have massively softened
and the laughter lines have pretty much disappeared,
i'm allowed to say that because we've known each other for a long time and she's not gonna kill me.
If supposing
i want to put
a slight darker shade to debs face to make her cheek bones stand out a bit more,
debs can you move towards this wall a tiny bit.
That's it, perfect. I don't know if you can see
but this side of debs face is very very slightly brighter, i might be
blocking the light,
but this side of debs face is now very very slightly brighter than that side,
just by moving her a bit closer to the wall.
Let's take a picture because that's when you're probably gonna really notice it.
So
here we go, and also you'll notice i'm shooting with a long lens
and a wide aperture
to blur the background
but look as you can see now we've got a slight darkening of
debs left hand side of her face
and it's just giving a lovely shape to her and those cheek bones.
Let's go and have a look over here, come on
there's another little hole over here, now
pretty much the, how did we do this before? i think we did it here didn't we,
come forwards a bit deb,
go that way a bit
and now back a bit, bit more, there.
Side lighting,
women hate it, it doesn't work for ladies, now if you've got a
teenage girl who's skin is kind of like stretched out like some molded plastic
then you can kind of get away with it, it gives you shape.
But someone who has had a bit of life and enjoyed themselves a bit
you're gonna have a few little marks, so let me take a shot of debs just standing
here
and the light is coming predominantly from the side,
and although it's quite nice looking
and it's showing up all the little features and textures of her
face it's really too harsh.
it's a more masculine sort of a light, can we swap places a moment,
let's have ago.
Now where was it, Jayne's gonna have to direct me where I need to be.
Speak to me,
to get that side lighting
okay,
so now I've got a bright side to my face
and a darker side
and it's showing up all my little wrinkles and lines and craggy bits around
my eyes, the fact that I've got a bit of a hooked bent nose.
For a bloke this is okay because we're fine rough trouser wearing characters
but for the girls
frontal soft lighting is usually the best of the lot,
one last little spot we can have a look at is here
Debs can i borrow you again?
Jayne you might need to go out first with the camera actually,
the reason i kinda like it here is because as you can see it's windy,
look at debs hair, volumized by a wind machine.
So deb is now standing in beautiful light
