Hi this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. One thing you want to worry about when you're
a cornerback is covering a deep route. You never want to get beat deep, they call that
the big play. You never want to be the guy that gives up the big play to a receiver.
Now many reasons can happen that you're going to get beat on a go route. One could be; I
think this guy is not as fast as he is, so I'm going to play up close to him and then
he blows by me. Another way that we can do this is, sometimes I want to play bump and
run coverage, this guy might be quicker than me, or he might have a better move than me,
meaning when I come in, he is going to shed me and go by me and beat me. Sometimes, when
you're covering somebody, when it's wet out or whatever, you're going to slip in your
back pedal or you're going to get off balance. When that happens, and when the receiver goes
by you, you can't give up on the play. You still have got to recover and get down field
and cover him. So what happens is, if I get out of balance here and he blows by me, one
of the things I have got to do first of all is I have got to turn, look for that receiver
and sprint as hard as I can to get back in the play. Then, I'll try to make a play. When
he turns around to catch it, then I can get down, I can recover, and try to get my hands
in the play, or at least make the tackle so he does not even get a huge play out of it.
So even if you get beat on the play, it is not that big of a deal, but you have got to
recover, and have to at least make the tackle on the play if you get beat on the go route.
