Welcome to Soundview's summary-in-brief of Tribal Leadership:
Leveraging Natural Groups to Build a Thriving
Organization, written by Dave Logan, John King,
and Halee Fischer-Wright. Logan and King are co-founders of the management
consulting firm
CultureSync. Fischer-Wright, a former partner of CultureSync,
is a private practice physician. In Tribal Leadership,
we are introduced to the perspective that every company is a tribe,
or a network of tribes, meaning groups of 20 to 150 people
who at least know of each other. And a company's success
depends on the strength of its tribal culture and the effectiveness
of its tribal leadership. Logan, King,
and Fischer-Wright help leaders to evaluate their company's dominant
tribal cultures on a 1-to-5 scale of stages.
They also provide a leadership navigation system for steering tribes to
a higher stage
of productivity and profit. Interestingly,
three fourths of the workplace tribes studied
operated below the ideal level of stage 4,
which is the level at which tribal members gain tribal pride
and are excited to work together toward a common purpose.
In Tribal Leadership, leaders are offered specific
instruction with leverage points for managing people in
each of the five stages. Ultimately,
there are strong lessons for leaders who seek to understand,
motivate, and grow their tribes for best advantage.
