But let's look at the booklet that you were given.
Has everybody got a booklet? Everyone got a booklet? Okay. The cover of the booklet does include the URL of the library. That's important for
you to know. The inside front cover just gives you an idea of what we're going to be doing today.
In our first module right now we will be looking at some of the common
research strategies that are evident in all kinds of systems. We'll also consider even a little more the importance of that thorough literature review
and academic integrity and I hope I'll be able to give you some good publication tips for your particular thesis or dissertation.
and then we will actually look at the library website and see
what parts of the library website that you can take advantage of as far as resources and services.
The services that we will tell you about I hope will make your lives easier and is as I said part of what the library is about and also we'll speak just
for a moment about that the need to judge the value of Internet resources.
and in module three is actually your time with the information advocate for your particular field of study. The library has a program called
Information Advocates where we assign a faculty library to each academic unit
and that person makes it his or her business to know the resources that are
valuable to that particular discipline. So you'll be able to have time with the information advocate
for your particular field of study during Module III.
On page three I've included some resources that we will probably not talk about today but you may
want to go back to to use in order to verify information
or add to the information that that is important as you go along in your research. The bottom
half of that page is very important it says theses and dissertation
Some of you are here because you are
really involved in your thesis or dissertation right now. Others of you may be fairly new
to the university and you're you're still just trying to figure out
resources for your coursework and so forth.
It doesn't matter we're going to cover all of that.
But, in particular, we have here in the preparation of your thesis and dissertation
mention of a book. The bibliographic citation of a book that's important to you.
The Thesis Manual and Style Guide for Use at Florida Institute of Technology and also some information about the office that can help you with
that. Below that our bibliographic citations for the style guides that we see are very important to the graduate students. And at the top of the next
page, page four, we actually list some resources where you can go to find out about theses or dissertations
that have been already published that might be useful for your your topics.
The rest of that page has some information about some Internet sites that may be
of interest to you and also two real good sources on academic integrity
one of which is a a free eBook by way of the National Academies Press.
Page five is where we're going to spend most of our time this morning
so you wanna keep that handy the scope and search strategies.
Page six is an expansion of one of the search strategies, Boolean logic. Some people really benefit from seeing a graphical
depiction of things and so we provided that.
And page seven addresses three parts of the Internet that we need to think about: searching it, evaluating what you find there,
and then documenting what you choose to use in your
publications. Pages eight through 11
contain an overview of the Library's website so this is one of those spots you may wanna go back and make some notes as we go through
that the web site during Module II.
On page 12 we've included a Catalog search tips sheet.
This is this may be helpful as you choose to use our catalog to find information resources. Page 13 all about interlibrary loan services. Some of
you have probably already begun to use interlibrary loan either for your current
work or previous work. How many of you are familiar with interlibrary loan or document
delivery? Okay so some of you discovered it. Others of you will come to know and love it.
On page 14 we have a list of all of our information advocates so that all you can certainly have contact information for yours but there may be
some reason why you would want to contact the information advocate from another discipline in case you're working on a special project.
Page 15 is a place for you to take some notes and on the back cover we have information about
of library basic information about
access to the library, library hours, and so forth and then my contact information.
Always feel free to contact me.
I may not be the best person to answer your question.
I would guess I'm probably not going to be the best person to answer your question.
But I can certainly refer you to the best person. So never hesitate to be in touch with me if you have a question.
The information that's included in this booklet when it's updated
will be available on the library's website or we actually have a rack in the library where you can get the most up-to-date information.
