Hello. I'm Michael Harris of Utah Surgical Arts. I am a board-certified oral and maxillofacial
surgeon and have both a medical degree and a dental degree. Orthognathic surgery, or
corrective jaw surgery, is one of the most rewarding services offered a Utah Surgical
Arts. When one or both of the jaws failed to develop correctly, the patient is often
unable to chew or speak efficiently. The orthodontist can often correct this condition, but in some
cases, the abnormal growth is severe enough that the orthodontist can't correct it without
jaw surgery.
While the purpose of jaw surgery is to correct the functional problem, a natural result of
jaw surgery is improved aesthetics. The most amazing positive changes in appearance that
I've ever seen, are after orthognathic surgery. The orthodontist prepares for the jaw surgery
by using braces to align the jaws for their new position. Once ready, the surgeon then
separates the jaws and then moves them to the new position. There are very small incisions,
if any, made on the skin. Typically, the surgery lasts two to four hours and the patient spends
no more than one night in the hospital. Most patients miss a week or two of work and a
non-chewing diet is required for six weeks. Once the surgery is completed, the orthodontist
will finish the small fine corrections needed to finish the bite. Most patients were braces
for eighteen to twenty four months with the surgery completed somewhere in the middle.
