In this example we're told that Sarah needs
1.5 cups of ketchup to make her meatloaf.
She has a 20-ounce bottle of ketchup.
How much of this will she need for her meatloaf?
So what we'd like to do is to determine 1.5 cups
equals how many ounces?
So let's see if there's some conversion information in the table that will help us.
Let's start by
writing 1.5 cups
over 1 so we have a fraction,
and then we want to find a conversion
that will place cups in the denominator and
ounces in the numerator, and if I look up here in my table
there's a relationship between cups and ounces. 1 cup
is 8 ounce. So I'm going to put the information,
8 announces on top, 1 cup in the bottom,
that means my cups are going to cancel out
1.5 times 8 is 12 ounces.
Therefore 1.5 cups
is 12 ounces, and Sarah
will need or I should say Sarah will use
12 of the 20 ounces in the bottle.
