Good afternoon. I’ve bought a machine to manufacture animals.
I’ve never used it, and I don’t know how it works.
I said I was going to act as a clown for the Pope, and then Fr. Alvaro’s face changed
and he said to me: “My son if you spoke in Italian,
the Pope would understand you perfectly.”
“But Father,” I said, “it’s not that my Italian is bad, it’s non existent!”
And then he translated one by one each of the words
and I wrote them in my diary.
I know that Fr. Alvaro was really happy to know that the Pope had laughed so much.
And since then I did it five more times.
I can tell you something beautiful.
Some time ago, the Holy Father had invited me to dinner at 19.30.
We heard in the corridor the steps of someone who was dragging his feet.
And I thought: “My goodness! how tired the Pope must be…”
After greeting him I said, “Holy Father, how tired you must be!”
And he answered very strongly:
“At this time of day I have no right not to be tired.”
After the shooting of the Pope when he was very seriously ill in hospital,
we had to leave Rome and I always like the Pope to know
when I leave Rome so he can bless me for the journey,
so that he may be so good as to pray for me…
On that occasion we couldn’t ask for an audience,
but we went to the hospital to speak with his secretary and say:
“We are leaving. When you can, please let the Pope know.”
And he said: “Wait a moment.”
After a minute he returned saying: “The Holy Father is waiting for you.”
It was a small room, a dark room, in the hospital.
And the bed was in the middle of the room and the Pope had a high temperature.
I know because I touched his arms and they were really hot.
And I saw him so cheerful, and he was praying.
