Hi, I'm Captain Ray Vonner with the Page Police Department for ExpertVilliage.com. What we
are doing today is showing you how to start a Detector dog. We have here a tin that has
a small amount of marijuana in it. This dog has not been trained, we just picked him up
for the genetic drives that he has that he can be a detector dog. When we show him the
ball, He just wants this ball really bad so, what we'll do is we're going to play a game
with him and then we're gonna put the ball in one of these bags here, but we're also
going to hide the marijuana beside it. A dogs all factory senses picks up all the different
scents, not like ours where they mix them together; a human will pick out the strongest
one. A dogs all factory senses will divide them all up. So, what we're going to do is
we're going to hide the ball, which the dog really wants to look for and really want to
get with the marijuana that is going to be close by and then when we sit it down we,
want him to look for the ball but, also he is going to smelling the marijuana. After
a while we'll take the ball from him and say where's the dope? Find it! Find it! what are
you looking for find it, then he'll go and he'll know (dog) well, the last time I was
looking for the ball but, I found the marijuana but ,I know my ball is around there some place.
So then he'll alert (dog) and say ("I found it! I found it!, now where's the ball at?)
then the handler will slip the ball in there as a reward. So, what we'll do is we have
him watch this time, because remember this is a new dog it's has never been trained.
So, we show him and we play the game. (Trainer places the articles in bags and talks to the
dog "Oh look what I have, where is it at, where is it at) Okay, I show it to him now,
he has to look for it. Now, when he knows it's in there we say "get it out of there!,
where is it at?" That's the fun, that's the fun we want to see. We just say "Good boy!
find it! find it! oh, there it is good boy! good boy!". That's what we want to see that's
his reward for finding what we are looking for. Now, this one is "Drug detection" it
could be anything. If, we wanted to go search for a cadaver out in the lake, then what we
want to do is find that scent that we can duplicate and then we put it out there and
then we go and search for the dead body or a drowning victim. We can do a search and
rescue where we have him (dog) look for somebody that is lost and then when, he finds the person,
that is lost there is a reward there. So, we can have the person have the ball and when
he finds them they get the praise they get the positive reinforcement then they play
with them with the ball or with whatever he likes, some of them like balls, some of them
like toys, squeek toys, some of them like sticks. so, we get a pvc pipe it doesn't matter,
what we want to do is find the genetic drive that makes them search like that.
