Ideal candidates; a person with light skin and dark hair is the best
candidate for laser hair removal. When the skin is light, less energy is
absorbed by skin pigment and more energy is available to target the hair
follicle. For this reason light hair is harder to treat as it contains less
pigment for the laser to target.
Alexanderite and Diode lasers are the most effective hair reduction lasers,
and are predominately use for light skin and dark hair. However an
experienced medical professional can also treat a person with dark hair and
stark or tan skin using a Nd:YAG Laser.
To make the treatment successful the average number of treatments needed
may be slightly higher than with the other lasers. Light colored hair such
as red or light brown hair contains very little targetable pigment. Thus
more treatments are typically needed to reach the ideal goal.
It should be noted that at this time neither lasers nor IPL, Intense Pulsed
Light, are able to permanently treat blonde or white hair. Those who have
just a few stray white or gray hairs, usually choose electrolysis to remove
them.
Laser hair removal should be avoided if the candidate; One, Suffers from
sunburn or rash on the treated area. Two, Takes medication such as Accutane
or medications with sun sensitizing agents. Three, Has a pace maker. Four,
Has metal screws in the treated area. Or five, Is pregnant.
