Agia Marina monastery is famous for it's holy healing water that comes from Sariza spring
and the icon of Saint Marina. Located across from Apikia village, north of the town of
Andros, it is accessible by bus or car. The history of the monastery dates back to 1325
where it was built during the Byzantine empire but was later closed in 1837 by royal decree.
In the intervening time it remained closed, it was looted and burnt down three times until
1976 when it was restored, reopened and converted to a monastery for nuns. Amongst the treasures
which were saved from the fire is the icon of Saint Marina, 17th century heirloom, and
the icon of the weeping *** Mary. According to Christian Orthodox tradition, the monastery
celebrates its saint every year on the 17th of July as the feast day of Agia Marina.
