Hey everyone Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m checking out Accel’s super coil
on plug kit for all 99-04 Mustang GTs. Accel has been in the performance ignition game
for well over 40 years, and continues to produce parts that aim to squeeze every ounce of horse
power out of your car, whether it’s a weekend cruiser or an all out drag strip monster.
These Accel coils give your modular motor a spark that is 10-15% stronger than your
OEM coils by using a specialized magnetic steel core, optimized winding, resistance
and turn ratio, this basically equates to a hotter, stronger spark, which gives you
more horsepower and better fuel economy. This is extremely important to those of you looking
to get the most out of your motor, but may be dealing with old faulty OEM coils, possibly
resulting in a misfire. Alright I know what you’re thinking, get to the good stuff already,
gotcha. Ultimately we want to see what kind of improvement these coils will make on our
GT, but before we do that let’s get a baseline number down and see what we’re working with.
So
our baseline run on our 2000 GT gave us 221 horsepower and 261 ft/lbs of torque. Now let’s
get those stock coils out of there and install our Accel units. Install is very simple and
should take you about 30 minutes using standard hand tools, I will advise you to disconnect
your battery first and then go ahead and remove your intake tube, that way you can access
everything a whole lot easier. You will need to grab a 7mm socket, and remove each one
of your coils individually replacing them with the Accel units. So now we have everything
installed here back at the shop we’re going to run the car once again on the dyno and
see the improvements this kit made on our GT. So with our Accel coils installed we put
down a total of 220 horsepower and 267 ft/lbs of torque, now while we didn’t see any peak
horsepower gains from the coils, we did manage to pick up 7 horsepower and 11 ft/lbs of torque
throughout the curve. Let’s face it, getting old stinks, especially when it comes to critical
components pertaining to your ride, your factory coils are a great example. As they age they
have a tendency to fail, resulting in loss of power, worse fuel economy, and ultimately
a poor running vehicle. This kit from Accel is a great way to make your modular motor
feel young again for a fraction of the price of new OEM coils.
