IPADS FOR SOLDIERS
>>REPORTER: Patriotism and technology came together to help the troops at Walter Reed
Medical Center this weekend.
>>FOUNDER OF IPADS FOR SOLDIERS: The soldiers that came back that were injured with the
War in Afghanistan there was a lot of IUDs so they’re losing limbs and first if they
lost their hands or arms they can use the IPAD with the touch screen.
>>SOLDIER: It’s an iPAD who doesn’t want an iPAD especially when it’s free?
>>REPORTER: The non-profit group “iPads for Soldiers” delivered the tablets. Its
been shipping them to troops overseas since 2010.
>>FOUNDER: So we decided to concentrate on the infantry soldier that carries the ruck
on their back that doesn’t have room for books and photo albums so the iPad was a very
useful tool for them to store everything when their down on the base.
REPORTER: Its also making a difference among wounded vets at home, finding different ways
to put technology to use. Like this solider, who was inured when an IUD exploded nearby.
>>SOLIDER: I do have a lot of memory issues like I’m constantly having to look at my
calendar even though I just looked at it and went “okay I have an appointment in an hour”.
Ill forget where it’s at and stuff like that.
>>REPORTER: But the gifts are not just a matter of functionality, they’re a way of saying
thank you as well.
>>FOUNDER OF IPADS FOR SOLIDERS: When you come here to Walter Reed and you deliver an
iPad to these soldiers most times they don’t even believe that its an iPad that you’re
giving them they’re like “no way, this is printer paper this is not an iPad.” And
they’ll rip it open and see an iPad and there’s this big soldier with tears in his
eyes just because people have come to him, given him an iPad, did not forget him.
>>REPORTER: For The Daily, I’m Josh Bernstein.
