Presenter: The Work Integrated Learning Program is an exciting part of QUT's real world connection
to industry. In this program students can undertake a creative project, an internship
or an international study tour in their chosen industry and gain academic credit. This program
creates real links between what students learn at university and the skills that they'll
then need in the real world. We're here at Queensland Ballet to talk to some students
and their supervisors about the internship experiences.
Melissa Batterbee: Hi my name's Melissa and I recently
an education events internship at Queensland Ballet.
Erin White: We worked with Melissa as part of the work integrated learning program and
she undertook the role as our education events intern. That role was designed to assist with
the development and delivery of the education program as part of our Cinderella season.
Melissa: Within my fashion major, throughout the whole of uni, basically three years of
knowledge that you accumulate about how to market items to a customer. I took a lot of
that knowledge and then incorporated that into my internship here because I will also
able to assist in creating events that were in line with the visual artistic direction
of the company. Alot of that is practical based, you're not designing the products,
you're learning how to market it towards the audience"
Erin: We had a great time working with Melissa. I think the real benefit of working with students
who are immersed in their learning at the time is that we're then getting this up to
date industry practice walking into our door and it's wonderful to see how things are evolving
and changing and have that reciprocal exchange with the students. It was also wonderful working
with Melissa in particular. She had a very keen eye for detail which was a great support
during a very busy period and she had a real flair for design and event design. So those
particular skills that she bought to it were wonderful for us and I think we were also
able to help her with her journey and her career.
Melissa: I've learnt so much more within the whole creative environment that I can definitely
use those skills that will transferable over to me being a practitioner within the fashion
industry. Erin: Alot of our interns that we've had through
have actually progressed on to other employment and internship programs through the industry
so we're really keen to follow their careers and are pleased to be part of that.
Melissa: All the skills that I've learnt here I would never have been able to learn within
just doing an internship within a fashion environment so definitely will make me a interdisciplinary
practitioner for the future.
