>> Rana Kahn: [Background Music] Hi.
My name is Rana Kahn.
And I'm the Director of the Master's Program in Biotechnology Studies
at University of Maryland University College.
This is an interdisciplinary program offering a combination of science,
business, and internship training.
A combination that earned the designation of a Professional Science Master's Degree.
UMUC's Master of Science and Biotechnology is a 12-course, 36-credit part-time degree program
that can be completed fully online.
The program offers specializations in three areas.
Biotechnology management, bioinformatics, and biosecurity/biodefense.
All entering students take five core courses that lay a broad foundation
in molecular biology, business of biotechnology, bioinformatics,
societal issues in biotechnology, and project management.
Students then move into the six specialization-specific courses depending
on their area of interest.
The final course for all the specializations is the Capstone course where students work in teams
to complete a project for a biotech company or an organization.
We have a vibrant and diverse pool of faculty who are practitioners in the field.
All the faculty members teaching in this program hold a PhD Degree and are employed
in the private sector or the government.
Working on projects that are directly related to what they teach in the classroom.
Listen to these alumni talk about what they do, and how the program prepared them for it.
>> And so I graduated last spring.
Within a couple months, I had a job at GeneDX, which is just up the road in Gaithersburg.
We're a clinical [inaudible] company.
So we do testing.
I work there as a Lead Analyst, Policy Analyst, and help write regulations
for Social Security's [inaudible] Disability Program you may have heard of.
>> Rana Kahn: [Background Music] In addition the employer-sponsored Capstone projects,
we hold an annual symposium where senior executives from the private
and public sector talk about the careers and technology trends in the field of biotechnology.
Another professional mentoring program is also available to students
where biotechnology professionals mentor students to guide them with developing
and achieving their career goals.
In summary, the Biotechnology Studies Program at UMUC is a cutting-edge program
with a rigorous curriculum and strong application in the workforce.
