UNIVERSAL DESIGN.
THE CONCEPT OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN.
IS THAT INSTEAD OF
TRYING TO ACCOMMODATE
WHEN A SPECIFIC ISSUS ARRIVES,
TO TRY TO HAVE THE ENVIRONMENT
ALREADY SET UP
SO THAT THE MOST AMOUNT OF PEOPLE
CAN BENEFIT FROM IT.
WE SEE EVIDENCE OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN
IN OUR ENVIRONMENT.
ELEVATORS, RAMPS,
CURB CUTS,
AUTOMATIC DOOR OPENERS.
THESE THINGS ARE DESIGNED
MOSTLY FOR PEOPLE WITH
MOBILITY ISSUES
BUT OTHER PEOPLE BENEFIT
FROM THEM AS WELL.
SO IF YOU'RE PARTICULRLY TIRED
AMD WANT TO TAKE THE ELEVATOR
OF IF YOU'RE
CARRYING MANY THINGS
IN YOUR HANDS
AND YOU WANT TO USE THE
AUTOMATIC DOOR OPENER
THEN YOU BENEFIT
FROM THE UNIVERSAL DESIGN
INHERENT IN THE ENVIRONMENT.
THIS APPLIES TO THE CLASSROOM AS WELL.
AND THIS MIGHT APPLY TO
DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES.
YOU MAY ALREADY BE AWARE
THAT DIFFERENT STUDENTS
LEARN DIFFERENTLY.
SOME ARE VERY VISUALLY
ORIENTED,
SOME ARE AUDITORY,
SOME ARE MORE HANDS ON,
AND SO IT'S A GOOD IDEA
TO TRY TO TEACH
IN A WAY THAT
TOUCHES ON ALL OF THESE.
INFORMATION THAT IS PRESENTED
ORALLY SHOULD ALSO BE
PRESENTED VISUALLY,
AND VISE-VERSA.
SO HOW THIS MIGHT APPLY TO
A STUDENT WITH A DISABILITY
IS IF YOU HAVE
A HARD-OF-HEARING STUDENT
IN YOUR CLASS
YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE TO
HAVE A LOT OF VISUAL
INFORMATION FOR THAT STUDENT.
SO IF YOU ARE SHOWING
A VIDEO IN YOUR CLASS
ITS A VERY GOOD PRACTICE
TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT VIDEO
HAS CLOSED CAPTIONING.
NOT ONLY STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
BENEFIT WITH CLOSED CAPTIONING
BUT ALSO STUDENTS
WHO ARE MAYBE LEARNING
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE OR
JUST MORE VISUALLY ORIENTED.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS IF
YOU HAVE ANY
FILES THAT YOU E-MAIL
TO STUDENTS OR
THAT YOU HAVE AVAILABLE FOR THEM
ON BLACKBOARD LEARN OR
SOME OTHER TYPE OF
LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.
STUDENTS WHO USE SCREEN READERS
SUCH AS JAWS OR
KURZWEIL 3000
MAY HAVE DIFFICULTY WITH
CERTAIN FILE FORMATS
SUCH AS PDFs.
A GOOD PRACTICE
WOULD BE TO HAVE A
VARIETY OF FILE FORMATS
AVAILABLE TO THE STUDENT.
SO IF YOU DO HAVE A PDF
ON THERE MAYBE ALSO HAVE
A WORD DOCUMENT.
OR AT LEAST HAVING THAT AVAILABLE
IF THE STUDENT NEEDS IT.
