Welcome to Module 5 of the Leading Edge Certification Course.
We have now passed the midpoint of the course. I am learning much from you. What a talented
group of teachers! Lets review our path to date. In our face to face session and Module
1 we got to know each other, establish a routine for the course and start the discussion and
reflection process. In Module 2 we looked at research that defines, compares and contrasts
online, blended and face to face instruction while continuing to work our collaboration
skills and toolbox to enhance collaboration and learning. Module 3 focused on examining
many of Web 2.0 tools that we are blessed with and asked us to consider how to best
use these tools to help students work in the upper levels of Blooms. We know that most
students learn better when they are placed in a structure that encourages interaction,
participation and collaboration. Building this community of learners was the focus of
Module 4.
Module 5 is all about accessibility. Universal Accessibility as defined in Section 508 of
the Rehabilitation Act and Universal Design concepts that promote the creation of inherently
accessible content for both people without disabilities and people with disabilities
will guide our work for this module. We will also apply these accessibility principles
to all of the work that is included in our final portfolios.
After you read the textbook for Module 5 you will be asked, as part of your forum post,
to struggle with questions like "How accessible are your current instructional materials?"
My short answer was OMG I really have a lot of work to do in this area. Give me strength!
Fortunately there are only two assignments in Module 5. As always you will post a topic
on the discussion forum by Sunday and respond to at least two origional posts by other students
by Wednesday. Your forum post will also serve as your reflection for this unit.
Your portfolio assignment asks you to create a video or screen cast and transcript for
this video, publish this video on YouTube and close caption this video. I suggest that
you use Screencast-O-Matic to get things started if you are new to creating videos. Check out
the video tutorials included with this assignment and the resources for Module 5 for guidance.
George and Karen will do a live lesson on creating and publishing videos on Thursday
March 20 at 7:00 PM. Look for an email invitation coming soon. This lesson will be recorded
and included in the Module 5 Resources for those who do not participate in the live event.
Hope you have a great week. Looking forward to "seeing you" online.
