[music, female narrator] Welcome to This Week @Minnesota.
[Les Potts] We are taking down a diseased elm tree
that has Dutch elm disease, so we are trying to get it
down before there's any potential for a further spread.
The big picture is we're diversifying the culture
of trees- the variety of trees.
We will not replant in the middle of the panel.
These trees have been around for, I'm estimating,
one hundred to one hundred and twenty-five years.
Now we're trying to keep them all open through the center
so that the view from Coffman to Northrup
and vice-versa is there.
[male narrator] The U of M said goodbye this week to one
of its greatest leaders, President Robert Bruininks,
who officially stepped down June 30th
after nine years in the presidency.
He will return to the faculty after a year long sabbatical.
[clapping] [Eric Kaler] Hi, I'm Eric Kaler.
How are you?
[male narrator] Bruininks departure makes way
for a new president, Eric Kaler, who began his term July 1st.
Kaler toured campus this week to refamiliarize himself
with the University where he earned his Ph.D.
in chemical engineering in 1982.
Examining both the East and West Bank campuses as well
as St. Paul, he even made an impromptu stop
for ice cream at the U's Dairy Lab.
[music, female narrator] That's This Week @Minnesota.
