Presenter: And the winner is Ros Bower, Northern Territory.
Ros Bauer: Winning the Excellence in Language, Literacy
and Numeracy Award personally is an acknowledgement of the work that I have been doing in terms
of community capacity building, but from a broader sense it really acknowledges the achievements
of Warlpiri people in the Yuendumu community and the way they have embraced a learning
culture. I think that what drives me is that adult literacy underpins everything that we
do, whether it's in our personal lives, our community or civic lives or our work lives.
But particularly in the current context where I am working in Yuendumu is that peoples personal
and first engagement in literacy needs to be developed before all the work literacies
happen and it's easy to drive something when people are so responsive to the opportunities
to learn, which is certainly what's happened in Yuendumu and I hope that by winning the
Award I can actually raise the profile of adult language, literacy and numeracy at a
national level. I want to acknowledge the Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation and the Warlpiri Triangle
College in Yuendumu for the opportunity that they have given me to actually work in a way
that from a social practice approach to adult literacy and to actually draw attention to
some of the good things that are happening in Yuendumu.
