Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü ’ › : Hi, I’m Fred Burke. I’m the Executive Director of
Career Services here at Hofstra University, and today is our spring Career Internship
and Job Fair going on in the arena. We have about a hundred employers here looking for
students for both internships and summer opportunities as well as full time employment when they
graduate.
It’s really important for students to know the do’s and don’ts of job fairs. The
first do is of course come professionally dressed and bring plenty of copies of your
resume. Your resume should be critiqued by the career center before you go to make sure
that you’re marketing yourself appropriately and to the best of your abilities. You want
to also make sure you’re prepared ahead of time by knowing who’s going to be at
the fair. A list is usually always available of the employers that will be attending. You
should look at that list, research the companies, go on their website, and know a little bit
about them before you approach them at the job fair. Make sure you approach all employers
that are of course relevant to what you’re looking for, but there are sometimes employers
that are, maybe it’s not necessarily an accounting company, but a company that needs
accounting interns. Even at our not for profit fair, a lot of finance and accounting students
can find a lot of opportunities there. So you need to be focused but also open minded
when you’re at a career fair. Make sure you’re giving your employers your full attention.
Do not have your cell phone on you, make sure it’s silent, and be very polite and respectful.
When you introduce yourself to an employer, be sure to shake their hand, be confident,
smile, be polite, and be sure to tell them a little bit about yourself besides your name
and your major, because then they really don’t have a lot to go by, but if you can give them
some background on your skills, your work experience, whether it’s relevant to the
field or not, but give them an idea of what you’re looking for as well, what kind of
opportunities you want. Then they have more of an idea of how to respond to you and to
say whether or not you’re a good fit.
I came here today to look for an internship and I’ve been pretty successful. I found
one with child protection services, and it’s a potential internship for the fall.
I came here mostly because I’m interested in n international job, and so I came to talk
to the employers to find out more about the traveling aspect of their jobs.
When you come to something like this, you just sort of expect that every company only
specializes in one field, but being an IT major, you kind of know that every company
has an IT department and that, no matter what they say, that they’re always looking for
IT people.
So far, the career fair has been pretty promising. I met with Apple, Macy’s, and I’m planning
on meeting with a few others. Hopefully something good will come out of it.
Hi, my name is Mindy Lee from North Shore LIJ Human Resources. Basically, we’re the
largest employer on Long Island and we have over 14 hospitals and other facilities, and
we’re looking for, actually, all ranges, from entry level to management level, from
finance and accounting to health management to IT people, and I have met a lot of students
here who are interested especially in the finance industry. They are very well qualified
and we are hopefully looking forward to having them come on board with North Shore LIJ.
I came here because there’s supposed to be a lot of employers, and I wanted to get
my resume out and try to meet some people face to face, and it was a great opportunity
because I actually got to meet with an employer that I put in an application with earlier
this week and really show them, you know, how I could differentiate myself from the
other candidates, so I think it’s going to give me an edge.
