Hi, I'm Linda Wooldridge and I'm a home school mom. How do I teach my home school student
to read? It's one of the most thrilling things you'll do as a home school mom; it's also
one of the most difficult things you'll do as a home school mom. Imaging the responsibility.
If they don't learn to read, you feel like such a failure. But the truth of the matter
is, they will learn to read, just in their time not yours. After all Thomas Edison didn't
read until he was twelve years old, and he turned out o.k. A good idea is to start with
a program that will help you help your child learn to read. How to teach your child to
read in a hundred easy lessons or any one of a number of other reading programs. Invest
in some of those Little Readers. You know the ones, the Bob books, Doctor Seuss. Although
truthfully Doctor Seuss is a little bit advanced for a beginning reader. Read to your child.
Read to your child a lot. And if you can't read to your child, use books on tape and
let them follow along. Especially with the beginning readers, they have the tone that
let's the children know when to turn the page. And here's another thing. Look for words everywhere.
These two simple letters, AT will get you started. You can put an H in front, or a C
in front, or a P in front. You get the idea. Once they learn the AT sound, they know how
to read a whole lot of words. And that'll be really encouraging for your beginning reader
on that day when things aren't going too well. keep plugging away at it. Keep reading to
your child and have a good time. After all, you're sharing a brand new experience together
and you'll never get to do it again. I'm Linda Wooldridge, have a great home schooling day.
